What causes hip pain?

The hip joint is formed by the femur and pelvis, and is a ball and socket joint, meaning it has a high degree of freedom to move. That said, it also absorbs up to ten times your body weight repeatedly throughout the day, and 100’s to 1000’s of repetitions!

The hip serves as a link between your legs and torso, so if you are having issues with the surrounding areas, or with the hip itself, the hip joint can become painful, and stiff and affect your daily movement.

Treating hip pain starts with listening to what led this to happen, then assessing your spine, pelvis and hip movement, strength and stability. A review of the assessment results into a collaborative plan that may include a specific exercise programme tailored to your needs, and education/advice on achieving your goals. You don’t need a referral to see a Physiotherapist and if necessary, we can refer you for x-rays or scans to rule out any bone-related conditions.

How Physiosouth treats hip pain

  • Record a detailed history – including when you first noticed the pain, and a history of other injuries that could contribute
  • Assess your hip by looking at – movement, strength, functional patterns and special tests
  • Diagnosing your injury, and providing insight into the structures affected
  • Choosing the best hands-on treatment to provide (soft tissue massage, dry needling or acupuncture, mobilisation or joint manipulation)
  • Creating an exercise programme and updating it as you progress, that helps you achieve your goals
  • Give you advice on how to manage your pain and the injury and how to reduce the risks of it happening again
